We had no idea. The idea for this mural began with a casual text message the day that the very limited two-day concert event was announced by Chappell Roan. She announced a special pop-up concert tour called "Visions of Damsels & Other Dangerous Things". It would ONLY take place in three cities, New York and Los Angeles, of course, but in a nod to her hometown of Willard, Missouri, the short run of shows would also pop up in the nearby Kansas City, a few hours from her hometown, where her family still resides, just outside of Springfield.
We knew the event would bring in people from all over the country, and it certainly did. The announcement within Kansas City was massive and rippled through the media and blew up the news cycle. Fast forward a bit, and two weeks before the show, in the heart of Kansas City, near 35th and Broadway, just south of a beloved Kansas City music venue, Uptown Theater, in the parking lot of Hamburger Mary’s, where Chappell Roan, now famously, caught her first drag show, a landmark mural was being painted.
This wall, the south wall of the Valentine Apartments, and this parking lot would become the center of attention for Kansas City media. Every TV News Station came out. The Kansas City Star, the city’s newspaper of record, set up camp in this parking lot, documenting the multi-day timeline of the creation of this mural.
From those TV stations stopping by, they filtered the timely content onto their affiliate stations all over the country. The story aired from coast to coast, and when fans started showing up TikTok took over!
One of Kansas City’s best PR companies, Will Gregory Public Relations, ran the mural through Critical Mentions. That service tracks reach through traditional media, showing millions of impressions across traditional platforms. We have no idea how to track all of the attention it received via TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook.
We are so grateful for our friends in the Kansas City media for always being willing to cover our murals and ever more so, a massive hat tip to you for jumping in the basket in the lift and going up in the air to capture such great moments!
