Chappell Roan is many things. She’s our Midwest Princess, a Grammy winner, and she hails from Willard, Missouri — not too far from us here in Kansas City.
In July 2025, she announced a special tour of pop-up shows in just three cities. Of course, the entertainment hubs of New York (four shows) and Los Angeles (two shows) made the list. But the true surprise was Kansas City, gifted with two unforgettable nights at Liberty Memorial Park on October 3 and 4. Nearly 40,000 fans packed in each night for the sold-out shows.
Years before, long before the world knew her as Chappell Roan, Kayleigh Rose Amstutz attended her first drag show at Hamburger Mary’s in Kansas City. That night left an impression. Now, full circle, her presence lives on in a massive mural at 3724 Broadway Blvd — on the wall of Valentine Apartments, right beside Hamburger Mary’s and Uptown Theater, one of KC’s iconic venues.
The mural was conceived by artist Jared Horman, who drew inspiration from Chappell’s song “The Subway.” Wanting a collaborator, he reached out to Spray KC, who suggested Springfield-born artist Christine Riutzel, who we meet from her work at the OverLay mural fest in Springfield, MO. The stars aligned: two Missouri artists honoring a Missouri icon on a 45-foot-wide by 33-foot-tall wall.
What began as a simple text message from Jared to Spray KC has now reached millions of fans online and thousands in person during Chappell’s KC shows. And with Kansas City hosting six World Cup games in 2026, the mural will soon welcome visitors from around the globe — a lasting celebration of music, art, and Midwest pride.
