Master Piece started with a ridiculous idea.
Paint more than a mile of wall along the Missouri River. Bring in 100+ street artists from more than 20 states. Give them three days. Then turn them loose.
Led by the artists known as Evolution, Master Piece took four months of planning and one wild Memorial Day weekend to pull off the biggest mural project Kansas City had ever attempted. More than 1.1 miles of wall stretching from Berkley Riverfront toward the historic West Bottoms became a massive open-air canvas.
Then Kansas City showed up.
Thousands of people packed the Riverfront Heritage Trail on foot, bikes, scooters and with dogs on leashes to watch the walls change in real time. Everywhere you looked, artists were painting. Spray cans were rattling. Colors were stacking on top of colors. A blank stretch of concrete became something completely different by the hour.
It wasn’t a gallery opening. It was a live art takeover.
“Kansas City is an arts city, and this will be one of the largest mural projects in America,” said Jon Stephens, President and CEO of Port KC.
By the end of the weekend, Kansas City had something it had never had before: more than a mile of street art along the Missouri River,
created by more than 100 artists in one unforgettable weekend.
Big idea. Big walls. No playing it safe.
Master Piece earned its name.
