The story behind a mural often begins months—or even years—before the finished artwork is revealed. This one came together in just 14 days.

As Port KC prepared for the May 18 opening of the KC Streetcar Riverfront extension, it acquired a 40-foot shipping container and positioned it at Berkley Riverfront Park as a colorful gateway welcoming passengers to the Streetcar’s newest stop.

Spray KC teamed up with Kansas City muralists Dani Roma and Tony Sanderford to transform all four sides of the container into a large-scale piece of public art. With opening day quickly approaching, the artists worked long days to complete the mural in time to greet the first Streetcar passengers arriving at the Riverfront.

The finished piece celebrates life along Kansas City’s riverfront. Bold bubble lettering and shades of blue draw inspiration from the Missouri River, while an ombré palette reflects riverfront sunsets. Figures playing volleyball and soccer, walking dogs and enjoying the outdoors capture the energy and community of Berkley Riverfront Park.

“It showcases all the different activities that you can do in the riverfront,” Roma said. “There’s somebody holding a volleyball, somebody kicking a soccer ball, somebody walking a dog.” Here’s an easter egg for you, the dog in the mural is actually Dani’s dog and they appear in several or her murals around the region!

“In Kansas City, the arts are front and center, and so we believe that adding art to all the green space and the trails and the amenities is so important,” said Jon Stephens, President and CEO of Port KC.

Positioned at one of Kansas City’s newest transportation gateways, the mural has the potential to be seen by one million Streetcar riders each year, welcoming visitors and residents with a colorful reflection of the Riverfront.

“The biggest thing for Kansas City is the community’s reaction to artwork,” Roma said. “We’ve had so many people walk by and say, ‘Yes, another mural.’ The city loves it. The community loves artwork.”
